About us

We host regular public events, exhibitions and festivals in Greenwich, engaging with both local and international communities, presenting our leading research to global audiences.

Our primary goals are:

  • To deliver world leading research in sound and audiovisual practice.
  • To effect change that increases diversity and opens access to contemporary electronic arts.
  • Foster new research talent within a constructive, collaborative, community.
  • Promote practice research methods as tools for novel understanding and critical analysis.

Strategy

The SOUND/IMAGE Research Group is one of the most active clusters in the School of Design. Using practice as a tool of critical enquiry, we investigate the possibilities available to create new aesthetic experiences through a range of sonic and audiovisual media technologies.

Facilities

Our state-of-the-art facilities are equipped with a wide range of professional studios and equipment:

  • Studio One:  ADR and Stereo Studio for mixing and voice work.
  • Studio Two:  Stereo Sound Studio for mastering and composition.
  • Studio Three: Bespoke Sound Studio, for recording Foley, ADR and 5.1 surround sound mixing.
  • Two TV Studio sound stages for filming and recording.
  • Seven Post Production Edit Suites with stereo monitors and soundcards for mixing and Foley or ADR recording.
  • Surround Sound Cinema style lecture theatre.
  • Digital Art and Design Lab.

Equipment

We have a wide range of equipment for sound recording in a variety of contexts, professional software for audio editing and sequencing, loudspeaker equipment for surround sound concerts & multichannel installations).

Microphones
We have a wide selection of microphones for recording, including NeumannSennheiser and Rode microphones with Rycote accessories.

Loudspeakers
As a standard we use Genelec loudspeakers in all of our studios, edit suites and in multichannel concerts and installations.

Software
We use the latest professional audio editing software in our studios including Pro ToolsIzotope RXAdobe Creative CloudWaves and Sound Toys, among many others.
