On our Graphic and Digital Design degree, you’ll learn a wide range of creative practices, including typography, branding, photography, creative coding, AR/VR, illustration and moving image.

Our Graphic and Digital Design with Foundation Year degree combines essential visual communication skills with our three-year design degree programme of specialist topics such as typography, and branding and advertising.

In the Foundation Year, you will learn the fundamentals of visual communications, including visual languages, storytelling and strategies for communication.

After completing the Foundation Year, students can progress into the three-year Graphic and Digital Design degree, graduating with the same award; or switch to a related creative degree pathway, such as Animation or Media and Communications.

Within the three-year design degree programme, you will explore a broad range of creative practices including photography, moving image, creative coding, illustration, AR/VR, data visualisation, creative AI, and print, through technical workshops, intensive design briefs and contextual studies.

With a strong focus on the creative industries, the programme also includes courses in professional development designed to help you build an industry-ready portfolio and confidently launch your career.

Popular career options for our graphic and digital design graduates include roles in creative agencies, particularly those specialising in print, publishing, packaging, advertising, branding and interaction design.

How you will learn

Teaching

Learning takes place through a combination of timetabled learning and independent study.

You can view more information about how each module is taught within our 'What you will study' section.

Seminars and workshops enable you to discuss and develop your understanding of topics covered in lectures in smaller groups. You will also be able to meet your personal tutor. Timetabled learning may fall between 9am and 9pm depending on your courses and tutorials.

Class sizes

This design course is largely studio-based. The number of lectures available for support in the studio varies depending on the intake each year.

Independent learning

Outside of timetabled sessions, you are also expected to dedicate time to self-study. This will include working on visual projects, writing and group-work.

Working through the studio sessions on a regular basis is essential. Each week builds on the previous week so it is important not to get behind. We recommend that you read widely to keep on top of the subject.

You can use studios, our Stockwell Street Library and online resources to support your self-study.

During the week you can also:

  • Attend additional support classes in some modules
  • Attend guest lectures from industry experts
  • Take part in employability and enterprise workshops
  • Join Student Societies.

Overall workload

If you are studying full-time, you should expect the workload to be similar to a full-time job. For part-time students, this will reduce in proportion with the number of courses you are studying.

Each module you study towards this degree is worth 15 or 30 credits. These represent around 150 or 300 study hours respectively.

If you receive 72 contact hours for a 30-credit module, you should expect to commit 228 hours to independent study to complete it successfully.

Assessment

You can view how each module is assessed within our 'What you will study' section.

Each course has formal assessments which count towards your grade. Some courses may also include 'practice' assignments, which help you monitor progress and do not count towards your final grade.

Feedback summary

We aim to give feedback on assignments within 15 working days.

Dates and timetables

The academic year runs from September to June.
