Copywriting support

Our in-house copywriters provide a range of resources to help you create University of Greenwich material. They can also give you extra support, such as writing or proofing, if you need it.

If you are a member of University of Greenwich staff and want to know more about creating university copy for an external audience, please read on.

The university’s in-house copywriters are part of the content and brand team. They support the strategic goals of the Marketing and External Relations Directorate, such as student recruitment and raising brand awareness.

Through services such as copywriting, editing, proofreading and interviewing, they also create material for the wider university.

The types of projects they work on include:

  • Prospectus copy
  • CRM email copy
  • High-profile external-facing reports
  • High-profile website pages
  • Internal documents of strategic importance
  • Third-party university profiles
  • Open Day material
  • Scriptwriting for videos
Copywriting resources

Tone of voice and written style
To help you create your own copy, please see our guide on the university’s tone of voice and written style. This will help you produce text that’s impactful, on-brand and inclusive.

You can download this from our internal brand toolkit.

You could also activate Microsoft Word’s inclusiveness checker, which is designed to identify and suggest replacements for language that might be perceived as biased or offensive.

Messaging Matrix
The Messaging Matrix is a marketing resource for university colleagues. It is available as an Excel file in the internal brand toolkit and has up-to-date marketing statistics, boilerplate copy, video and resource links, student quotes and faculty messages. You can use these resources to give your text extra depth.

There is also a shorter version on Brand Centre, the university’s digital library. If you don’t have access to this, contact the brand champion for your faculty or department.

The content and brand team is responsible for updating and maintaining these resources. If you have any queries, please email content@gre.ac.uk.

Copywriting requests
If you have a more complex project, you can use Brand Centre to request support.

Please be aware that the copywriters don’t have the capacity to support all requests, so focus on projects that align with the aims of their directorate. If they are unable to help, they will suggest other forms of support, such as outsourcing your job to a freelancer or agency.

Please avoid last-minute requests and provide as much notice as possible. Factors that can impact on how long a job takes include the length of copy and the number of people who need to be contacted or consulted.

As a first step, please see the guides below with important information that will help you establish if the copywriters will be able to support your project.

If they can, please complete this copywriting brief and send it to content@gre.ac.uk. The copywriters will then be in touch to discuss your project.

Following this, you must submit a formal request through Brand Centre. You can attach the copywriting brief to your Brand Centre request.

Useful guides
Before you submit your request for support, please see our content and brand guides, particularly those on:

  • The types of projects we can and can’t support
  • The process for working with our copywriters
  • Estimated notification and turnaround times.

If you have any queries, email content@gre.ac.uk.

Outsourcing copywriting support

If the copywriters cannot support you on this occasion, they can give you details of approved freelancers and agencies.

Any quote from an agency or freelancer is likely to include one or two rounds of amendments. Subsequent alterations will usually incur additional charges, so make sure you know what you want from the outset and provide a tight brief.

For more on outsourcing your copywriting project, see our guide.
