YouTube and Vimeo

Do you want your video uploaded to YouTube or Vimeo so it can play on the university’s website? The video team are the people to contact.

Video-hosting platforms YouTube and Vimeo provide a key public-facing window into life at the university. They supply prospective students, staff and the wider community with a polished and professional view of what the university has to offer.

To maintain high standards, our video team can only upload videos to these platforms that meet specific quality benchmarks, including strong production values and correct branding.

Video essentials

An effective, high-quality video should have the following features:

  • Narrative – a clear beginning, middle and end; the video should finish on a positive note or call to action (a message encouraging the viewer to perform an action such as visiting a website)
  • Branding – university logo and graphics that are on-brand and correctly positioned
  • Messaging – positive, insightful, with unique selling points
  • Filming – an unimpeded view of the subject or activity
  • Edit – coherently structured with fluid transitions
  • Visual consistency – colour graded to ensure a professional, polished look
  • Accessibility – closed captions (mandatory), audio description (if appropriate).
Which platform?

When you contact us to upload a video, it’s essential that you give us enough information to determine whether YouTube or Vimeo is the most suitable platform.

To read about the benefits of the two platforms, please see our guide How the university uses YouTube and Vimeo.

What to supply for a video upload

When you ask us to upload a video, you will need to provide us with the following:

  • The video, both final version and clean version without graphics or soundtrack, plus the SRT file with the video’s subtitles
  • A clear communications plan detailing the video’s purpose and target audience so we can advise on the appropriate channel(s)
  • A title and description – we reserve the right to edit these to attract more views
  • Copyright permission, if using a soundtrack
  • Consent forms, if relevant.
Content restrictions

We must be highly mindful of our diverse audience, which includes different cultures, age groups and backgrounds.

Our goal is to maintain a positive, inclusive and professional presence on YouTube and Vimeo that aligns with the values of the University of Greenwich. If in doubt, ask a colleague to review your video for a second opinion. We can also advise.

Under no circumstances will we publish videos that contain:

  • Nudity or sexually explicit content – this includes partial nudity, sexually suggestive material or any inappropriate depictions
  • Negative messaging about the University of Greenwich – content that misrepresents, criticises or damages the reputation of the university
  • Expletives or swear words – including offensive language, even if bleeped or censored
  • Hate speech or discrimination – content that depicts, encourages, or promotes homophobia, racism, sexism, ableism, religious intolerance or any form of discrimination
  • Violence or graphic content – footage that glorifies or depicts physical harm, abuse or distressing imagery
  • Misinformation or misleading content – false claims, manipulated media, or content that spreads misinformation about the university or any other topic
  • Illegal or harmful activities – content that encourages or showcases drug use, underage drinking, gambling, vandalism or any illegal behaviour
  • Harassment or bullying – videos that target, demean or intimidate individuals or groups
  • Infringement of copyrights or privacy – unauthorised use of copyrighted music, images or footage, and content that invades someone’s privacy without consent.
