Tuition Fee Loan – Student Finance England (or Equivalent)

Undergraduate Students

If your tuition fees will be paid by Student Finance England (SFE) or another UK government student finance provider (such as Student Finance Wales, Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS), or Student Finance Northern Ireland), please select this payment option during your online registration.

If You Have Not Yet Applied for Student Finance

If you have not yet applied for student finance, or you are still waiting for the outcome of your application, you can still complete your online registration.

However, you must:

  • Submit your student finance application as soon as possible after registering.
  • Ensure your funding is confirmed within six weeks of completing your registration.

If your tuition fee funding has not been confirmed after six weeks, you will become personally responsible for paying your tuition fees. This may be through:

  • A government student finance provider.
  • A private lender.
  • An approved sponsor.
  • Self-funding.

It is your responsibility to ensure that appropriate funding arrangements are in place and that your tuition fees are paid by the relevant deadlines.

Student Finance England (or Equivalent) – Postgraduate Students

Postgraduate Master's and Doctoral Loans

If you are receiving a Postgraduate Master's Loan or Doctoral Loan from Student Finance England (SFE) or an equivalent UK student finance provider, please note that these loans are paid directly to you, not to the University.

This means you are responsible for paying your tuition fees and should select the Self-Paying option during Online Registration.

Payment Required at Registration

Before your registration can be completed, you must pay 15% of your total annual tuition fee.

As your first postgraduate loan instalment is normally released after you have registered, it is important that you plan ahead to make this initial payment.

Home students – how to pay if you are paying yourself

Self-Paying Undergraduate Students

If you are paying your tuition fees directly (not using Student Finance England), your payment schedule depends on whether you are a new or continuing student.

Instalment Plan for UK Home Postgraduate Students

The remaining tuition fee balance can be paid by instalments as follows:

PaymentDue Date
15%At registration
18%14 October
33%14 February
34%14 May

If you begin your course in January or another intake, a comparable instalment schedule will be arranged.

Please submit a Fee Query during Online Registration so that the Student Finance Team can confirm your payment dates.

Important Information

This instalment plan applies to both:

  • Students receiving a postgraduate loan from Student Finance England (or an equivalent UK funding body).
  • Self-paying UK Home postgraduate students.

Please remember that the initial 15% payment must be made before your registration can be completed. As postgraduate loan payments are released after registration, you should ensure you have sufficient funds available to make this payment in advance.

Home Students – Paying Your Own Tuition Fees

Self-Paying Undergraduate Students

If you are paying your tuition fees yourself (i.e. you are not receiving a Tuition Fee Loan from Student Finance England or another UK student finance provider), you can pay your fees in instalments.

The amount you must pay at registration depends on whether you are a new or continuing student.

Payment Requirements

  • New students: You must pay 50% of your total annual tuition fees before completing registration.
  • Continuing students: You must pay 25% of your total annual tuition fees before completing registration.
  • Remaining balance: After the required initial payment, the outstanding balance will be divided into up to five equal monthly instalments, depending on your intake.

If you have already paid 50% or 100% of your tuition fees before registration, no further payment is required at registration.

Please note that alternative payment plans are not available, so you should ensure you are able to meet the payment deadlines.

Sponsorship (payment process for sponsors)

If your tuition fees are being paid by an employer or an official sponsoring organisation, the sponsor must formally confirm the sponsorship and request an invoice by emailing PATteam@gre.ac.uk.

The sponsorship request must include:

  • A formal request for an invoice on company or organisation letterheaded paper.
  • Your full name and University of Greenwich Student ID number.
  • The title of the course you are being sponsored for.
  • The amount of sponsorship in pounds sterling (£).
  • A purchase order (PO) number, if required by the sponsoring organisation.
  • The name and postal address of the invoice recipient, if different from the company or organisation letterhead.

Please note: Letters or emails from private individuals, including parents, relatives, or friends, are not accepted as official sponsorship and cannot be used to invoice tuition fees.

Part-Sponsorship

If your sponsor is covering only part of your tuition fees (For example 50% of the tuition fee), you are responsible for paying the remaining balance.
You can either:

  • Pay the outstanding balance in full; or
  • Contact the Student Finance Team to discuss the payment options available to you.

Please note that you remain personally responsible for any tuition fees not paid by your sponsor. Any outstanding balance may result in penalties or restrictions in accordance with the University's Policy for Non-Payment of Tuition Fees.

Financial Support for Home students: Sharia-Compliant Options and Guidance

At the University of Greenwich, we recognise that some students may choose not to take out interest-bearing loans due to religious beliefs. Whether you are starting an undergraduate or postgraduate programme, we are committed to providing inclusive and supportive financial guidance.

Our Student Finance Team offers one-to-one appointments via Microsoft Teams to help you explore alternative Sharia-compliant funding options and understand the choices available to you.

Sharia-Compliant Financial Services

If you wish to avoid traditional interest-based loans (riba), a number of UK financial institutions provide Sharia-compliant financial products designed to align with Islamic principles.

These services typically avoid investment in prohibited sectors, such as gambling, alcohol, and weapons, and provide ethical alternatives for financing.

Examples of providers offering Sharia-compliant financial services include:

  • Al Rayan Bank
  • The National Zakat Foundation (NZF)
  • United Bank UK
  • Ansar Finance

These options may be used alongside family support or other non-interest-bearing sources of funding.

Scholarships for British Muslim Students

In partnership with the University of Greenwich, the Aziz Foundation provides 100% tuition fee scholarships for eligible British Muslim students studying master’s degrees at UK universities.

Non-Repayable Student Finance Support

You may be eligible for grants or supplementary funding that do not need to be repaid, even if you choose not to take out a student loan. Examples include:

  • Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA)
  • Parent/Carer grants
  • Maintenance grants for students in Wales

You can apply for student finance without taking out a loan (for example, by requesting £0 in loans). This may still allow your household income to be assessed and could help you access University bursaries, scholarships, or other support.

Please visit your relevant Student Finance for full eligibility criteria and application information.

Government Progress on Sharia-Compliant Student Finance

The UK Government has been developing an alternative student finance model based on the principle of Takaful (mutual cooperation).

The proposed model aims to:

  • Provide an alternative to interest-based student loans.
  • Follow a structure similar to existing student finance arrangements.
  • Support students who require a Sharia-compliant option.

The proposal originated from a government consultation in 2014 and remains under development, with oversight from a Sharia advisory committee.

For further information, visit the UK Government guidance on Alternative Student Finance or speak with the University’s Student Finance Advice Team

For further details on interest-free or faith-sensitive finance options, visit the UK Government website or speak with our Student Finance Advice Team.

International students – when to pay

Securing Your Place

If you have been assessed as an international fee-paying student, you must pay a £3,000 tuition fee deposit to secure your place on your chosen programme.

If you require a Student visa, you may also be asked to make additional tuition fee payments before your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) is issued or before you complete registration. The amount required will depend on your country of residence and UK visa requirements.

International Fee Waiver Scholarship

If you have been awarded an International Fee Waiver Scholarship:

  • Your scholarship will be automatically deducted from your tuition fees at registration.
  • You must then pay 50% of the remaining tuition fee balance to complete registration.

Paying the Remaining Tuition Fees

Once you have paid your deposit (and any additional pre-CAS payment, where applicable), the remaining tuition fee balance can be paid in accordance with the University's tuition fee payment schedule or an approved instalment plan.

Sponsored Students

If your tuition fees are being paid by an official sponsor (such as a government, the British Council, or another recognised sponsoring organisation):

  • You are not required to pay the £3,000 tuition fee deposit.
  • To secure your place, please email a copy of your official sponsorship confirmation letter to accepts@gre.ac.uk.
  • Your sponsorship confirmation must be received within the same 28-day offer guarantee period that applies to deposit payments.

Please ensure your sponsorship letter clearly confirms the level of financial support being provided and includes your name and University applicant details where applicable.

International students – how to pay

Paying Your Deposit

If you are self-funding your studies, you must pay a £3,000 tuition fee deposit to secure your place.

  • The deposit should be paid within 28 days of receiving your offer to guarantee your place.
  • You may still accept your offer after this period; however, places on some programmes are limited and your course may no longer be available.
  • Please check our Capped Courses page to confirm whether your programme is still accepting applications.

Important information

  • The £3,000 tuition fee deposit is normally non-refundable, except in the circumstances set out in the University's Tuition Fee Charging and Refund Policy.
  • Paying your deposit confirms your intention to study at the University of Greenwich.
