Visas and Immigration for study in the UK

Biometric Residents Permit (BRP)

How can I collect my BRP?

There are two ways to collect your BRP, this would be at the university Student Centre or the post office of your choosing. You will have selected which option during your visa application.

What do I do if my BRP is lost or stolen?

Getting a replacement BRP is straightforward, but you may need to plan ahead to avoid disappointment with delays receiving the replacement BRP. It can take 2 months or longer to get a replacement BRP.

You will first need to report the BRP as lost or stolen on the Home Office webpage. Using the same webpage, you will then need to apply for a replacement.

If you lost the BRP outside the UK, then you will need to apply a replacement BRP visa which will let you re-enter the UK once. Then when you are back in the UK, you'll need to make an application for a replacement BRP.

You may view our BRP webpage which contains information on potential errors on the BRP which may need correcting, so when you receive your new BRP, please check it thoroughly.

Why is my BRP expiring on 31st December 2024 when my visa is longer than this?

BRPs are no longer required from 1st January 2025 as you will be able to prove your immigration status online without a BRP. UKVI will provide information on exactly how you can prove your status online in early 2024.

In the meantime, you may be able to use the UKVI webpage to get a Share Code and get full details on the true length of your visa.

My BRP end date is incorrect, what do I do?

If you applied for your Student visa outside the UK, you will need to report the problem within 10 days of it arriving.

If you do not so after 10 days, you can still report it, but may need to pay a fee.

If you applied for your Student visa inside the UK, you can ask for an administrative review. This is only available for mistakes in length and conditions.

My BRP has not arrived, what do I do?

If you have extended your visa in the UK and your BRP has not arrived, please check that your address is the same as when you made the visa application. If you have changed your address, you need to update it online and contact the delivery company TNT.

If you did not change your address and the BRP has not arrived 10-days after the decision letter was received, you would need to contact TNT to arrange a new delivery date.

When contacting TNT, you need:

  • Your address given in the application
  • Your 9-digit consignment number (this is found in emails from TNT and UKVI’s BRP courier delivery team)

You should only contact UKVI in the following circumstance:

  • You do not have a consignment number
  • TNT cannot assist with your query
  • It has been more than 30-days since the BRP should have been delivered

If you need help contacting UKVI, please contact the International Student Advice Service for help.

The working hours on my BRP are incorrect, what do I do?

Reporting an error with your BRP such as the working hours is easily done through the UKVI webpage.

Your working conditions will be written on your BRP, but we advise you check immediately you receive your BRP, so you know they are correct.

The working conditions of your Student visa depend on the level of course you are studying with the University of Greenwich and our Working in the UK webpage details this.

If the working conditions are incorrect, we advise you stick to the working conditions of your BRP until it is corrected.

Someone from the Home Office or police said my BRP is under investigation and asked for money, is this fraud?

The Home Office or the Police will never ask for a money transaction if there is an error with your BRP. In most cases, this will be up to you to identify and correct, rather than them contacting you.

If this has happened to you, please report this to Action Fraud if you are in the UK or by phoning their helpline on 0300 123 2040.

The Home Office have provided further information on their webpage on how fraudsters may contact you.
