Information for Repeating Students

TLDRoffon

It is very important that you take the time to understand how you are affected when required to repeat one or more of your modules.

Understanding when you may be required to repeat a module

If you have not passed many modules, the Progression and Award Board (PAB) may decide that you need to retake all your failed modules in the following academic year, which is known as ‘repeating’. A repeating decision by the PAB means you cannot progress to the next stage of your programme, or in the case of a final year student, cannot graduate this year.

Depending on your circumstances and how many modules you are required to repeat, you may need to repeat the stage of study as outlined above. Alternatively, you may be allowed to Progress with Intermediate Standing (PI).

Progression with Intermediate Standing: this means that you are permitted to progress to the next stage of your programme carrying up to a specified number of credits of failure. Reassessment in the failed module(s) will be in addition to the requirements of the subsequent stage.

Whether you are required to repeat your current stage of study or whether you will be able to progress with Intermediate Standing will be outlined in your Results Letter.

International Students

If you have not yet successfully completed all the assessments assigned to you during your last period of study, you may not have enough time on your current visa to complete your studies in the UK. If you need more time to complete your programme, you will need to extend your Student Visa.

If you need to extend your visa to complete your studies, you will need a CAS to support your Student Visa application. You can find more information on this here.

Your CAS request form will need to be sent together with your supporting documents to the Student Visa Compliance Team.

If you have some questions or concerns about the visa application you will need to make, contact the International Student Advice Service via email.

Student Finance

If you need to repeat a module or modules, you will be liable to pay tuition fees as published on our website for the new academic year. This is done on a pro rata basis depending on the number of modules that you are repeating.

For example, if you are an undergraduate student repeating 60 credits, your fees will be calculated on a pro rata basis that is 50% (60 credits/120 credits) of the total tuition fees charged for the year. To view the latest tuition fees at the university, please follow the link here.

If you have been deferred at the PAB but you notice a charge on your account or you believe there is an incorrect charge, you can contact our Student Finance team here.
