Our DBA is for senior professionals and executives seeking to enhance research skills and make impactful contributions to business administration through scholarly practice.

The DBA programme is tailored for experienced practitioners and business executives seeking to contribute substantially to their field of work by undertaking rigorous and impactful research that addresses contemporary business challenges in their organisations. Structured to support students through a blend of taught modules (pre-thesis stage) and independent research (thesis-stage) to ensure that candidates are well-prepared to generate new knowledge and drive organisational change.

We received Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) 2023. This recognises our outstanding performance in student experience and outcomes.

What you will study

Phase 1: Pre-thesis Stage (24 months, 180 credits)

  • Theories of Contemporary Organisations (30 credits)
  • Progress Review Panel (PRP) assessment (0 credits)
  • Global Sustainability, Innovation, and Ethics (30 credits)
  • Research Design and Philosophy (30 credits)
  • Literature Review and Critical Analysis (30 credits)
  • Research Development as a Doctoral Practitioner (60 credits)

Phase 2: Thesis Stage (24 months, 360 credits)

  • Thesis Writing and Submission (65,000 words)
  • Viva Voce Examination

We are an experienced team of academics and industry professionals. You will join one of our Research Centres and your supervisors will be experts in your chosen area. Our teaching is informed by research and consultancy work.

Entry requirements

  • An undergraduate (honours) degree with minimum 2:1 (or equivalent), or a master's degree with minimum 60% overall (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline.
  • Provide a detailed research proposal of approx. 1,500 words
  • Provide a Curriculum Vitae
  • Provide 2x academic or professional references.
  • Applicants are highly encouraged to identify and contact a potential DBA supervisor. They will guide applicants through the application and help shape the research proposal. Where possible, include the name of the potential supervisor(s) contacted in research proposal and personal statement.
  • Suitable applicants will be required to attend an interview

How you will learn

Teaching

Blended delivery with workshops, seminars, and online sessions. Through PGR induction sessions and scheduled mandatory Postgraduate Researcher Development Programme (PGRDP) sessions delivered by RETI, PGR seminars delivered at school level at EBC, as well as faculty-specific in-house workshops.

Independent learning

Beyond scheduled supervisory meetings, seminars, and other training sessions, you'll be expected to dedicate significant time to your research project. This will involve extensive reading, data collection, analysis, and ultimately the writing of your thesis. Our Stockwell Street Library and online resources will support your further reading and research.

You can also join a range of student societies, including the Doctoral Society.

Overall workload

Your overall workload consists of contact hours (seminars, research group meetings and meetings with your supervisor) and independent learning. Part-time students are expected to devote at least 16 hours per week to their research degree within a normal working week.

Assessment

You will need to successfully complete the taught phase with a pass mark of 60 and the Progress Review Panel, to proceed to the Thesis Stage, after which degree is awarded when you submit your thesis and successfully defend it by oral examination (viva-voce).

Accommodation

Greenwich

Living in halls of residence is a great way to make new friends and get into the social side of university life. With four great locations, all minutes away from the campus and the centre of historic Greenwich , you will be at the heart of one of the most beautiful university settings in the UK.

Rooms start at £146.30/wk and include Wi-Fi, utility bills, access to our on-campus gym and 24-hour security - and just a 10-minute train journey to central London. Students based at our Greenwich campus can also choose to live the Student Village at Avery Hill, which is only a short ride on our free shuttle bus.

Support and advice

Academic skills and study support

We want to make sure you make the most of your time with us. You can access study skills support through your supervisors, the research groups you will be affiliated to, our subject librarians and our online academic skills centre.

Where appropriate, we provide support in academic English and mathematics. If you need to use particular IT packages for a specific module, we will provide training for this.

The University of Greenwich also participates in SCONUL. This scheme allows research students to access or borrow materials from libraries at other participating universities. Other libraries may charge admin fees for issuing entry cards or similar.
