Exam cancellations

We understand some exams have been cancelled in certain countries:

  • Indian Class XII exams in Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates
  • GCE and A level exams in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates and in some cases Lebanon
  • International Baccalaureate exams across various countries including Bahrain, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates

We are closely following updates regarding other examinations, including Advanced Placement (AP) exams, where official cancellations have not yet been announced.

If your exams have been cancelled and you expect to receive final grades

Awarding bodies have announced that alternative assessment arrangements will be used where examinations have been disrupted or cancelled. In most cases, students are still expected to receive final grades within the usual timeframe.

Depending on the qualification and awarding body, grades may be determined through a combination of completed assessments, predicted performance, previous examination results, or a portfolio of evidence.

If you have questions about how your grades will be assessed, we encourage you to contact your school, college, or awarding organisation directly for further guidance.

We will accept grades awarded through these alternative arrangements for qualifications including:

  • International Baccalaureate (IB)
  • GCE A levels
  • Indian Class XII

If your examinations have been cancelled but you are still due to receive final grades through an approved alternative process, your offer will remain valid and your offer conditions will not change.

We understand that you may feel uncertain about your results and concerned about meeting the conditions of your offer following disruption to your studies. We hope that these alternative assessment arrangements will allow you to receive grades that fairly reflect your achievements and potential.

While we expect awarding bodies to take the impact of disruption into account when determining final grades, the University will continue to review applications carefully and consider individual circumstances where appropriate through our existing extenuating circumstances processes.

Cancelled GCE A levels

GCE A levels are regulated by Ofqual, and at present we understand that alternative portfolio-based assessment routes are not available for these qualifications. As a result, some students may be unable to receive a final award during the current examination session.

In response to this, some UK awarding bodies are offering affected students the opportunity to transfer from GCE A levels to equivalent International A level qualifications.

We accept GCE A levels and International A levels equally, therefore any change of qualification will not affect your offer or the way your results are assessed.

If you switch from a GCE A level to an International A level your offer will not change and we will accept your awarded grades the same as other applicants.

If your exams have been cancelled and you do not expect to receive final grades

If your exams have been cancelled and you do not expect to receive final grades this summer, please email mideast@greenwich.ac.uk include your UCAS Personal ID number or Greenwich Student ID and explain your circumstances. We will review your case and advise you individually.

Offer conditions and mitigating circumstances

We appreciate that even where exams are still taking place, your studies and preparation may have been significantly affected by events beyond your control.

We will not change your conditions for your offer before results are released, however, if you miss your conditions due to circumstances outside your control, we will carefully consider your individual situation when reviewing your application.
In all cases, you will not be automatically unsuccessful if you miss your offer conditions

Our priority is to ensure all students who join us are suitably prepared for their studies, so we cannot guarantee this flexibility will apply in all cases.

If you have any concerns, please email mideast@greenwich.ac.uk.
