Marketing and Brand Management, BA Hons

A degree that provides you practical experiences by working on live briefs on digital market and offers exemptions from CIM and IDM professional certificate.

Based on essential marketing principles, our degree in marketing management provides the skills and knowledge you will need to start your marketing career. Modules include customer insight, brand management and social media analytics. Work on live briefs from businesses such as the Institute of Data and Marketing, providing you with practical experience using digital simulation games.

  • 112 UCAS Tariff points. We accept A Levels, T Levels, BTECs, Access to HE and all other qualifications with UCAS Tariff points.
  • In addition, you will need: GCSE Mathematics at grade 4/C and GCSE English Language/Literature at grade 4/C. Equivalent qualifications may be considered.

We make Contextual offers to this programme. Applicants that meet specific eligibility criteria will be made a contextual offer with a reduced tariff of up to 16 UCAS Tariff points. Other entry requirements such as GCSEs, Interview, etc., will still need to be met. For further information, please see our Contextual Admissions policy.

How you will learn

Teaching

In a typical week learning takes place through a combination of:

Learning takes place through a combination of timetabled learning and independent study.

You can view more information about how each module is taught within our 'What you will study' section.

Seminars and workshops enable you to discuss and develop your understanding of topics covered in lectures in smaller groups. You will also be able to meet your personal tutor. Timetabled learning may fall between 9am and 9pm depending on your courses and tutorials.

Class sizes

Average intake per year is 10-20. Lecture sizes are normally 30-240, and seminars/tutorials are 15-30. This varies by module, if shared between degrees.

Independent learning

Outside of timetabled sessions, you'll need to dedicate self-study time (around 20-30 hours per week) to prepare for coursework, presentations and exams.

You can use Stockwell Street library and online resources to support further reading and research.

Overall workload

Your overall workload consists of contact hours (lectures, seminars, etc), independent learning, assessments, and field trips. Each credit equates to around 10 hours of study. Contact hours may vary depending on your modules.

In addition, during the week you can also:

  • Attend additional support classes in some modules
  • Attend guest lectures from industry experts
  • Take part in employability and enterprise workshops
  • Join the Marketing society and other student societies.

Assessment

Students are assessed through a combination of assessment methods depending on the modules chosen.

Each course has formal assessments which count towards your grade. Some courses may also include 'practice' assignments, which help you monitor progress and do not count towards your final grade.

Feedback summary

We aim to provide feedback on assignments and to release examination results within 15 working days.

Financial support

Further costs may include (but are not limited to):

  • Resources: you may need to purchase books for your studies, as well as specific computer software (estimate, £150 per year). Our Stockwell Street library offers a extensive range of books for loan, as well as access to journals and digital resources.
  • Field Trips: If there are any field trips, students may need to pay their travel costs.
  • Professional Memberships: As the course is accredited by IDM, you can sit professional exams in direct and digital and/or digital marketing. These are not compulsory but we advise students to take them. Students must cover the examination fee, which can be found on the IDM website. Ten IDM fee bursaries covering the cost of these exams are awarded to top-achieving students. CIM accreditation offers exemptions from certain professional diploma modules. Fees for any modules taken need to be paid by students.

Careers and placements

Will I have a work placement?

Work placements are optional, and you are responsible for arranging your placement with support from the university.

Previous students have secured a placement year at The Walt Disney Company, PwC and IBM.

How long is my placement?

Work placements are 9-12 months of full-time paid work. You take this between the second and third years of study.

What are the financial arrangements?

UK placement annual salaries range between £13,000-£18,000 pro rata. Some charity/voluntary work organisations offer travel costs and lunch expenses in lieu of a full salary.

What sort of careers do graduates pursue?

Graduates may find careers as advertising account executives organising advertising campaigns, social media managers engaging with social media channels, marketing executives promoting products and services, and copywriters communicating business messages. Many more opportunities exist in branding, market research and consultancy.

Are internships available?

Internships are optional, and last for a minimum of six weeks. Gain a Certificate in Professional Practice and valuable employment experience before graduating.

Access study skills support through your tutor, our subject librarians, and our online academic skills centre.

Where appropriate, we provide support in academic English and mathematics. If you need support to use particular IT packages for a specific module, we provide training for this.
