Empowering Internationally Educated Nurses (IEN) to achieve academic success, professional recognition, and confidence in UK healthcare practice. This innovative top-up degree has been designed specifically to support IENs in bridging the gap between their prior learning and the expectations of UK higher education and professional nursing standards.

Through a carefully structured curriculum, you will develop advanced academic writing, critical thinking, and research skills while deepening your knowledge of person-centred care, long-term health conditions, and professional practice. Our dedicated teaching team understands the unique challenges faced by IENs, including acculturation, academic transition, and adapting to UK healthcare systems, and will provide personalised guidance throughout your journey.

  • This course enables you to apply advanced academic and critical thinking skills to analyse, evaluate and synthesise evidence that informs professional nursing practice

How you will learn

Teaching

Learning takes place through a combination of timetabled learning and independent study.

You can view more information about how each module is taught within our 'What you will study' section.

Seminars and workshops enable you to discuss and develop your understanding of topics covered in lectures in smaller groups. You will also be able to meet your personal tutor. Timetabled learning may fall between 9am and 9pm depending on your courses and tutorials.

Class sizes

Class sizes vary by module, with a minimum of 20 and a maximum of 50 students. Lectures are generally attended by larger groups, while seminars and tutorials take place in smaller groups.

Independent learning

Outside of timetabled sessions, you are also expected to dedicate around 30 hours a week to self-study. This may involve further reading and research, preparing coursework and presentations, and preparing for tests and exams. Our facilities are designed to support you in these activities.

We encourage you to join societies and participate in sporting and other activities to engage in the wider life of the university community.

Overall workload

This course incorporates theory, clinical skills including simulation learning within the university. There is no element of placement practice in this degree.

Assessment

You can view how each module is assessed within our 'What you will study' section.

Each course has formal assessments which count towards your grade. Some courses may also include 'practice' assignments, which help you monitor progress and do not count towards your final grade.

Feedback summary

We aim to provide feedback on assignments and to release examination results within 15 working days.

What sort of careers do graduates pursue?

Teaching methods develop clinical skills, knowledge, and professional values, while assessments align with career pathways. These outcome of learning objectives set in this programme will help in future career as a nurse in UK. Employability support includes CV writing, job applications, interview prep, and career fairs. Students can join the Greenwich Employability Passport and access online resources for career development.

Do you provide employability services?

You may choose to apply to work in the UK after completing your studies. If you wish to work as a qualified nurse in the UK, you will need to successfully complete the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Test of Competence as well as OSCE(Objective Structured Clinical Examination) in Nursing. You will also be required to evidence your knowledge of English. Note: "This course does not confer NMC registration or a nursing PIN. However, its designed to support internationally educated nurses in consolidating their knowledge and skills, providing a foundation that may assist in preparation for NMC Registration."

Avery Hill

Our Avery Hill halls of residence are a home away from home to over 1,200 students. For those studying in Greenwich, our free shuttle bus service takes you to Greenwich campus in only 25 minutes. Excellent transport links also mean you can be in central London in under 30 minutes, and you're a short walk away from the historic Eltham Palace.

The Avery Hill student village has many useful facilities including a convenience store, launderette and two cafes. The halls are an ideal option for those wanting access to the hustle and bustle of London while living in a safe and relaxing parkland environment.

With our seven different halls, you have a variety of options depending on your preferences and budget. Rooms start at £133.98/wk and include Wi-Fi, utility bills, access to our on-site gym, 24/7 security and 24-hour residential support.

Support and advice

Academic skills and study support

The Programme Leader provides overall academic direction, while module leaders and teaching teams offer topic-specific support and feedback. Frequent communication occurs between students, tutors, module leaders and the programme team. Each student has a academic tutor for academic support and student advisor for pastoral support, with additional resources available for IT skills, library support, counselling, and students well-being.

Support from the department

The programme team is committed to providing a supportive learning environment that enables internationally educated nurses to achieve their full potential. Students are expected to engage with undergraduate requirements and the Student Engagement Policy. Week One induction introduces orientation to the university, including library, teaching and learning module online platform. First Module will be of  academic skills development. Early introduction of academic writing and evidence-based practice helps identify individual learning needs and provides tailored support.
