This course is not on the schedule for this year. However, it may be possible to include it on the calendar if there is sufficient interest. Alternatively, we could come to you for an in company course. Please contact us for more details.

Course overview

Explosions and fires within the processing industry from combustible materials are a known hazard and can give rise to serious injury - perhaps even fatality - such as in the Imperial Sugar refinery explosion in February 2008, where 14 people died, 36 were injured and the packing plant was largely destroyed.

Legislation introduced in 2002 - the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR) - rationalised workplace assessment for fire and hazard identification, and methods  of prevention or mitigation. DSEAR requires all workplaces where substances that could give rise to fire or explosion are handled or stored must be fully assessed and protected.

This course gives an introduction to the subject, the responsibilities and the simple measures that can be taken to reduce the hazard of a dust explosion. It includes a brief overview of current legislation and the safety precautions required to demonstrate compliance and provide a safe working environment for employees.

You'll learn

  • UK dust explosion statistics
  • What is an explosion?
  • Standard explosion tests
  • Generic vs. actual test data
  • Hazardous area zoning – 20, 21 and 22
  • Fundamentals of DSEAR risk assessment
  • Explosion prevention methods
  • Explosion protection methods

Format

A one day course designed to allow the subjects to be discussed in depth amongst the group.

Is this for me?

Plant operators and designers, plant managers, safety officers and maintenance personnel will all benefit enormously from attending this course, through improving their understanding of dust explosions and the requirements of current legislation.
The course will be of great interest to personnel that are new to materials handling, or require an update on the subject.

Venue

The course will be held on your premises at a time to suit your operational requirements

Course team

In-Company course

This course can be delivered as an In-Company course. These are proving to be a popular option for companies who have a number of personnel who would benefit from education in the subject area, for 3 main reasons:

  1. Cost: It is more economic for us to bring the course to you, than for you to send several staff out to us;
  2. Relevance: We can tailor the course programme to suit the operations you have in your plant, hence reducing the amount of material which is not directly relevant;
  3. Convenience: We can run the course when it suits you, even over several separate days rather than in a block if it is better for you.

If you are interested in discussing your requirements, please contact us.
