LLM Law with Placement Year

Where Law Meets Professional Practice – Advance your legal expertise, broaden your global perspective and gain valuable industry experience through a year-long placement.

The LLM Law with Industrial Placement is a distinctive postgraduate programme designed to equip students with advanced legal knowledge, critical analytical skills, and practical professional experience in an increasingly interconnected global environment. It focuses on international commercial law and the legal frameworks that govern global trade, business, and regulatory activity. The programme enables students to examine complex legal issues from both UK and international perspectives. Through a combination of rigorous academic study, independent research, and a twelve-month industrial placement, students develop the expertise, professional competencies, and reflective skills expected by contemporary employers.

The curriculum explores key areas of commercial law, international trade, dispute resolution, finance, and business regulation while fostering critical engagement with ethical, social, and policy issues. Graduates emerge with a strong foundation for careers in legal practice, business, government, regulation, and international organisations, supported by valuable industry experience and enhanced employability.

How you will learn

Teaching

You will learn through a blend of interactive seminars, workshops, case-study analysis, independent research, and guided academic support. The programme encourages critical engagement with contemporary legal issues, enabling you to apply legal principles to real-world commercial and international contexts. Learning is further enhanced through a 12-month industrial placement, where you will gain practical experience, develop professional skills, and reflect on the relationship between legal theory and practice.

Class sizes

These vary by option and activity. Lectures and workshops have the full class, while seminars or tutorials are normally attended by smaller groups.

Independent learning

Outside of timetabled sessions, you will need to dedicate time to self-study to prepare for coursework and presentations. Our Stockwell Street Library and online resources will support your further reading and research.

Overall workload

Your overall workload consists of contact hours (lectures and seminars), independent learning, and assessments. For full-time students, the workload should be roughly equivalent to a full-time job. For part-time students, this will reduce in proportion with the number of modules you are studying.

Assessment

On this course, students are assessed by a number of assessment types such as extended essays, presentations, reports, practical exercises and a dissertation.

Feedback summary

We aim to give feedback on assignments within 15 working days.
