Course overview
Where work with bulk solids, powders or dust can expose people to substances hazardous to health, COSHH places a legal duty on employers to assess the risks and prevent or adequately control that exposure. Compliance is therefore not simply good practice; it is a legal responsibility.
There are many COSHH training courses available, so what makes this one different? Its focus is specifically on the COSHH issues associated with bulk solid materials; powders, particulates, granules and dust. Drawing on The Wolfson Centre's in-depth knowledge of powder handling and dust control, the course relates COSHH requirements to the practical realities of bulk solids handling operations. It will allow delegates to understand the requirements, discharge their responsibilities and achieve compliance using an approach that is efficient, effective and not unduly burdensome. The emphasis is on understanding and applying the assessment process in practice, rather than treating COSHH as a paperwork or tick-box exercise. Common misunderstandings and mistakes will be highlighted and discussed with a view to demystifying the process and requirements.
Format
This interactive course combines in-depth instruction and presenter-led worked examples with a participatory session in which delegates will actively apply the COSHH assessment process. Working in small groups, delegates will complete an assessment of a realistic bulk solids handling operation using information provided about the material, process and working conditions, with guidance from the presenters throughout.
Case studies will be used throughout the course to illustrate how COSHH requirements apply in practice, supported by discussion periods in which delegates can raise questions and explore specific problems or situations from their own operations.
