Panopto is a leading solution for the capture and playback of lectures. It is used in universities across the world to securely capture lectures, broadcast events, deliver training and to serve legacy media new uses.

Panopto caters to many types of recording equipment, from professional microphones to webcams. Recordings can be viewed on PCs and Macs via the students' virtual learning environment (Moodle).

Information for Students

If any of your classes are recorded, they will appear under the relevant course in Moodle, up to two days after the recording.


Panopto offers accessibility features that allows users to easily navigate and read the Panopto web interface. The web interface supports screen readers for all available creator and viewer interfaces. The web interface also support keyboard access, allowing you to use the tab key to access all available functions. All sessions fully support adding and displaying captions.

Keyboard Access

All of the functionalities and links in the web interface are accessible by using the tab key. The tab key will move from function to function and you can hit enter to use that function.

Guest lecturers

You must always obtain written consent from guest lecturers or speakers before you record their lecture, talk or presentation. Ideally, you should not thrust the consent form into their hands a few minutes before they start, but send it to them well in advance when you are arranging their visit.

You may want to explain to them that the University needs them to sign the form in order to be able to record them, but that they can at any stage ask for the recording to be made unavailable from our systems.

Panopto off campus

For a local copy of the Panopto software for home PCs and Laptops and for Mac OS devices, you can download the software from by login in to and clicking on the "Download Panopto" link at the top right of the page. You can select to see all available versions for Windows and Mac OS platforms. The videos below also detail the process.   Panopto is not currently available for either Chromebook or Linux operating systems.

Panopto also provide apps for both Apple and Android devices.
