Teams Telephony

We’re upgrading how we communicate as a university. Our core telephony services are moving into the cloud, making it easier for all of us to connect, collaborate and support our students and colleagues, wherever we are.

The Teams Telephony project will move all core telephony services into Microsoft Teams, giving us a single modern space for calls, meetings and collaboration. This transition replaces legacy phone systems that no longer support current working practices with a cloud‑based approach that reduces technical risk and better supports hybrid working.

With Teams Phone, calls follow you wherever you log in, and features such as voicemail with transcription, call‑handling rules, self‑managed pickup/hunt groups and delegated calling are all integrated into the Teams environment. The move will simplify telephony, align with the university’s cloud strategy, reduce reliance on on‑premise infrastructure, and give you greater control and flexibility in how you manage your calls.

Alongside migration, we’re working with our supplier to deliver system updates and improve call performance.

What’s coming next

We're now preparing to migrate colleagues' direct dial numbers from legacy phones to Microsoft Teams. We are currently planning the migration schedule and will share the timeline here as soon as it is available.

Once migrated, you can make and receive calls entirely through Teams, without desk phones or mobile diversions. This will bring all your calls into the same place you already work every day, helping you pick up conversations, support students faster and stay connected across campuses.

Key Benefits

Our move to Teams will:

  • Bring calls, meetings and messages into one place
  • Offer a simpler, more flexible experience for hybrid working
  • Reduce reliance on outdated hardware and systems
  • Strengthen the reliability of the university’s telephony
  • Offer accessibility benefits due to Teams’ built‑in tools and support for existing headsets and assistive technologies
